Dossier

Overview

Survodutide is an investigational dual agonist of the GLP-1 and glucagon receptors from Boehringer Ingelheim and Zealand Pharma. It is being developed for weight loss and for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

Survodutide is an investigational dual agonist that activates both the GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and Zealand Pharma. The GLP-1 side handles appetite suppression and glucose control; the glucagon side increases energy expenditure and, importantly, drives reduction of fat in the liver. That combination makes it a dual-purpose candidate for both obesity and liver disease.

Its most closely watched indication is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) — the serious, progressive form of fatty liver disease. Phase II data has shown significant weight loss along with improvement in liver fibrosis, a notoriously hard endpoint to move. Phase III trials are ongoing, and it is not yet approved.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

Activates GLP-1 receptors (appetite and glucose control) and glucagon receptors (energy expenditure and hepatic fat reduction), combining satiety with increased metabolic rate.

Applications

Use Cases

  • Weight management (investigational)
  • MASH / fatty liver disease
  • Metabolic health
Evidence

Research Summary

Phase II trials show significant weight loss and improvement of liver fibrosis in MASH. Phase III is ongoing. Not yet approved.

Plain English

Explain It Like I'm 5 Years Old

This medicine pushes two buttons at once. One button (GLP-1) makes you less hungry and helps control blood sugar. The second button (glucagon) makes your body burn a bit more energy and, in particular, helps clean fat out of the liver. So it is being tested both to help people lose weight and to fix a sick, fatty liver.

Field Use

How the Gym Bros Are Using It

A next-gen GLP-1/glucagon dual agonist that is on the radar mostly for weight loss and, uniquely, liver-fat reduction. The glucagon arm bumping energy expenditure is the interesting wrinkle versus a pure GLP-1. Still investigational and trial-only, so this is future-watch territory rather than a current protocol — but it is one of the names to know in the pipeline alongside retatrutide.

Typical Dosing

Investigational; weekly subcutaneous dosing in trials. Not a medical recommendation.

Administration

Subcutaneous injection
